Exceptional, restored matching nr. Triumph TR4 from 1963!
This beautifully frame-off restored Triumph TR4 from 1963 is a true standout. The car comes with extensive photo documentation of its ground-up restoration, carried out in the ’90s by the renowned Kooy family. Hans Kooy was a highly respected Triumph specialist in the Netherlands. His craftsmanship is clearly reflected in the outstanding quality of this restoration. In June 2000, the car was featured in a five-page article in the Dutch magazine Klassiek & Techniek, which is a nice read. After the restoration, the car has been thoroughly enjoyed throughout Europe. The documentation file contains invoices dating back to 1995, which show that the car has been kept in great condition.
According to its British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, the car retains its matching nr. engine and is presented as ordered new in the colour configuration of ‘Powder Blue’ with a blue interior. The car was built on the 8th of January in 1963 and was despatched to the Triumph Motor Company dealer in San Francisco, USA. This vehicle was shipped from the Samuel Williams Wharf, Dagenham aboard the vessel ‘Karfanger’.
Finished in a striking and elegant colour combination, this TR4 presents exceptionally well and turns heads wherever it goes. The power comes from a strong 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine, paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox featuring overdrive. This setup delivers the pure, engaging driving experience that makes classic British sports cars so enjoyable.
This TR4 has a Dutch (EEC) registration. The car comes with a photo album of the restoration, various invoices, its Heritage Sheet certificate, a tonneau cover, convertible top including frame, a spare parts catalog, and the magazine from 2000 in which the car is featured on the cover and described in detail.
Offered at only 37.500,- Euro representing a fraction of the total restoration cost. Quite possibly one of the finest Triumph TR4s currently available on the market! A real pleasure to drive!
Model History
The Triumph TR range is renowned for its combination of robust engineering, engaging driving character, and long-standing success in British sports car history. The Triumph TR4 represents a key step in the evolution of the TR range, combining proven mechanical reliability with a significant step forward in refinement and usability.
Michelotti had designed a very attractive, modern body for what was to become the TR4. This new bodywork had such classic lines that, even today, the TR4 has a timeless beauty, which was absent from the earlier TRs. Contemporary road tests commented favorably on the new steering and the bodywork and the TR4 was generally well regarded in period.
The TR4 (and TR4A) used the classic Vanguard wet-liner engine in 86 mm bore form, giving a capacity of 2138 cc. While mechanically closely related to the TR3A, its modernised body, improved steering, and greater driver comfort secured the TR4 an important place in Triumph sports car history.
